TIM WELLENS DA LEGGENDA IN POLONIA

Wellens firma un’impresa da leggenda sulle strade del Giro di Polonia, andando in fuga sotto il maltempo con altri corridori nel ”tappone” di Zakopane e rimanendo solitario al comando quando ancora mancavano 45 Km al traguardo. La tenacia del corridore belga, già avvezzo a simili “performance”, lo ha portato infine a completare la tappa con un’importante vantaggio sul secondo arrivato, il nostro Davide Formolo, che ha terminato la tappa quasi 4 minuti dopo l’arrivo della corridore belga

Sarà stato il maltempo che ha imperversato per tutta la tappa. Sarà stata la fuga iniziata nelle primissime fasi di gara. Sarà, forse, perché nel ciclismo si ha sempre voglia di imprese, ma quanto fatto vedere oggi da Tim Wellens può essere considerato – senza timore di venir tacciato di esagerare – come “da leggenda”.
Il portacolori della Lotto Soudal è andato in fuga in avvio di tappa con un gruppetto ben assortito composto, oltre che dal compagno di squadra Sander Armee, anche da Philippe Gilbert, Loïc Vliegen e Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Giovanni Visconti, Jonathan Castrovejo e Rúben Fernandez (Movistar), Nicolas Roche (Sky), Maciej Paterski (CCC Polsat), Alberto Bettiol (Cannondale), Primož Roglič (LottoNL-Jumbo), Hugo Houle (Ag2r), Pawel Cieslik (Verva-ActiveJet), Ignatias Konovalovas (FDJ), Bob Jungels (Etixx), Fabio Felline (Trek) e Dion Smith (One Pro Cycling). Il vantaggio si attestava tra i 3 e i 4 minuti, in apparente controllo del gruppo. La seconda parte di gara, più impegnativa sotto l’aspetto orografico, invogliava parecchi degli inseguitori al ritiro (ben 86 corridori torneranno a casa dopo questa frazione) e scremava il gruppo di testa. Il belga forzava poi l’azione e rimaneva da solo ai 45 al termine, quando è così iniziata la cavalcata solitaria che lo ha portato alla vittoria, la sua quarta in carriera in condizioni meteo simili.
Alle sue spalle la seconda piazza è andata a Davide Formolo, giunto in solitudine dopo quasi 4 minuti, lanciato in un ormai tardivo tentativo di recupero. Quarto un ritrovato Fabio Felline.
